Denise Crosby Talks TNG at 25, 'Trekkies' and Reprising the Role of Sela

Denise Crosby, best known for playing the role of Lieutenant Natasha “Tasha” Yar on the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Sela, the alternate timeline Romulan, recently appeared on the Priority One podcast.

Last year, TNG celebrated its 25th anniversary. To observe the milestone, the cast reunited and appeared on stage together at several conventions around the world. Crosby discussed being on stage with her former castmates, saying:

Any time we’re all together and brought out on stage and sort of honored in that way is tremendous. You think about twenty-five years, it kind of wow flew by. It’s wonderful to have this place in the Star Trek history and to be so deeply appreciated is always so moving. We were all very very fortunate and we’re all grateful that we were a part of this.

She went on to discuss her appreciation of Star Trek fans.

It’s a symbiotic relation ship. Us, the actors and the fans. We couldn’t do it without you guys.

Crosby starred in both Trekkies and Trekkies 2, the documentaries by Roger Nygard which focus on devoted Star Trek fans. She talked about the documentaries and how she saw the cultural shift while making the first film. From fans being guarded about their fandom to seeing geek culture enter the mainstream.

I think the most significant thing is when I started out making Trekkies—the documentary—I was really beginning to see the culture changing, in that sci-fi, the internet was just starting to come alive, but people were pretty much still in the closet, so to speak, about their fandom and their eagerness to take part in this. I was seeing a sea change. It was all starting to happen. So I think where we are now is, it’s cool to be a nerd.

She went on to discuss returning to the role of Sela in “Legacy of Romulus”, the first expansion pack for Star Trek Online.

About a year ago when I was at conventions and fans would talk about Star Trek Online and they would talk about ‘Sela is on Star Trek Online and she’s an empress now of the Romulan Empire and why don’t you do the voice?’ They better be asking me soon to do the voice. They can’t have someone else doing Sela.

LeVar Burton To J.J. Abrams: “I Call Bulls**t”

LeVar Burton To J.J. Abrams: "I Call Bulls**t"

LeVar Burton, who played Geordi LaForge for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation, recently discussed the current direction of the Star Trek franchise — as it’s being handled by J.J. Abrams and the team at Bad Robot.

(Abrams’ Star Trek) was a great movie, and he brought a whole new generation to Trek. But I’m a little disquieted by things I hear coming out of his camp, things like he would like to be remembered as the only Trek – which would discount everything before he got there.

Burton went on to talk about how Abrams first film broke from the timeline of the original Star Trek universe.

There’s ‘breaking the canon,’ which he did (by re-inventing Star Trek’s timeline). But there’s also honouring the canon. And to pretend to be the only one is really egocentric and immature.

Burton, who’s character held the rank of chief engineer aboard the Enterprise D, discussed some recent scientific breakthroughs, which may lead to technology reminiscent of a holodeck and how TNG has influenced our culture.

I just came from a conference in San Francisco with Advanced Micro Devices, and they’re working on technology towards building a holodeck. That was Next Generation. And that’s part of what Star Trek has brought to the culture. So when JJ Abrams says, There should be no Star Trek except the one I make,’ I call bulls—, J.J.

In ‘Booby Trap’ Geordi is forced to revive a hologram of ‘Enterprise’ creator Leah Brahms when the ship becomes trapped in a lethal energy minefield. ‘The Enemy’ has the Enterprise rescue a suspected Romulan spy, while Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is stranded on a planet with a poisonous atmosphere. ‘The Price’ finds the Enterprise playing host to the many races who are all bidding for ownership of a stable wormhole, but the situation quickly threatens to turn dangerous. In ‘The Vengeance Factor’ Picard (Patrick Stewart) is forced to mediate between the warring clans of a distant planet, a task made more difficult after a clandestine murder. ‘The Defector’ sees Picard risk sparking off a war between the Federation and the Romulans when one of their enemies apparently defects with some secret battle plans. ‘The Hunted’ has the escape of a prisoner jeopardise the planet Angosia’s efforts to be accepted into the Federation. ‘The High Ground’ finds Dr Crusher kidnapped by terrorists from the planet Rutia, who are attempting to overthrow what they claim is a corrupt government. In ‘Allegiance’ Riker is abducted by aliens and replaced on the Enterprise by a carousing lookalike who attempts to seduce Dr Crusher. ‘Captain’s Holiday’ has Picard become involved in a treasure hunt with the beautiful but scheming Vash and her Ferengi companion. ‘Tin Man’ finds the Enterprise crew ordered to accompany telepathically-sensitive Betazoid Tam Elbrun when he goes to meet a new, alien life form. In ‘Hollow Pursuits’ Reg Barclay, a painfully shy engineer, places the entire crew in jeopardy when one of his holodeck fantasies gets out of control. ‘The Most Toys’ sees Data kidnapped by fanatical collector Fajo, only to malfunction and place his captor’s life in danger. ‘Sarek’ has the ailing Ambassador Sarek – father of original Enterprise crew member Spock – arrive to carry out his last mission. ‘Menage a Troi’ finds Troi and her mother Lwaxana (who is still infatuated with the captain of the Enterprise) kidnapped by Ferengi Damon Tog, forcing a reluctant Picard to sweep to the rescue. ‘Transfigurations’ sees Doctor Crusher save the life of a crashed, amnesiac alien by linking him to Geordi’s nervous system. Finally, in ‘The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1′, the Borg return with a renewed determination to assimilate Picard and use him as their spokesman on Earth.
