John Cho Talks Star Trek, George Takei and His Hopes for the Next Film

John Cho took over the role of Hikaru Sulu from George Takei for the reboot of the franchise. Recently he discussed the 2009 film along with the upcoming sequel. During the interview, Cho talks about getting to know Takei, his level of satisfaction with his own portrayal of the Sulu character and his hopes for the next movie.

“He’s always been a hero of mine. He’s the one that brought me into Star Trek, as a kid.” Cho said regarding George Takei. “I think every person of color in America knows what I’m talking about. When you’re switching the channels and you see someone who looks like you, you freak out. Especially in the 1960s and 1970s and even the 1980s, there just weren’t as many faces of color on television as there are today.” he explained. “So, George is someone who’s been a hero and been on my radar ever since I came to this country. So being connected to him in this way is a real honor.”

“Sulu’s battle was external in the first one, and I think it’d be interesting to see him have an internal battle of some sort.”

Cho discussed his level of satisfaction with the 2009 film and his role in it, saying “It is impossible for me to be objective. But I can only tell you what my reaction was. I was just screaming the first time we screened the movie. It was on the Paramount lot. The main cast was there and everyone was going nuts, as I was. I kind of forgot that I was in the movie. A lot of actors watch movies, watch themselves, in a very critical way and they start nitpicking. The movie was so exciting that I actually forgot to beat myself up. And I thought the guy playing Sulu was OK.”

“When I took the role I hadn’t read the script, even. said Cho. “I just knew that I wanted to be a part of it. I wasn’t sure how it’d juggle out. There were just a lot of characters to get to, it was a big story to tell, and I wasn’t expecting a huge arc. But that scene, the fight, was spectacular. It was something I hadn’t done before. It was new territory for me. So I was very happy with what I had, to answer your question.”

Cho went on to discuss his hopes for the next film, saying “Sulu’s battle was external in the first one, and I think it’d be interesting to see him have an internal battle of some sort. That would be fun for me, for him to struggle with a decision.”

Zoe Saldana Talks Racism in Hollywood

Zoe Saldana Talks Hollywood & Racism

Zoe Saldana, who took over the role of Nyota Uhura from Nichelle Nichols for JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot and stars in last weekend’s #2 film in the US, Colombiana, recently discussed the ever-present issue of racism in Hollywood.

“I’ve witnessed racism all my life. And of course there’s racism and discrimination in Hollywood. You go for a part and they say, ‘Oh, we really liked her, she’s amazing, but we wanted to go with something more traditional’. As if I’m not a traditional American!” said Saldana.

“I feel sorry for people like that. They need to educate themselves. Mostly you move on and say, ‘Well, I wasn’t meant to work with you or be around someone like you’. Other times you might say, ‘You’re ignorant, you’re a racist. That’s it. I’m out of here!’” she continued.

“It’s trendy to hate Americans right now. Deep down, some people are enjoying the fact that the most powerful nation on Earth is struggling a little – and then they deny that’s racist! And that frightens me.” Saldana commented.

JJ Abrams Considers Star Trek’s Return to TV

JJ Abrams considers Star Trek's return to TV

A new Star Trek TV series is something fans have been clamoring for since the cancellation of Enterprise in 2005. In a recent interview, JJ Abrams was asked about the possibility of Trek’s return to the small screen with himself along with the Bad Robot crew at the helm.

“I don’t know,” Abrams said. “It’s never really come up, frankly, but depending on what that would sort of be and how it would be done I’d be open to the idea of it. Right now we’re just sort of focusing on making a movie that’s worth people’s time.” he continued.

Fresh off the success of his summer hit Super 8, JJ Abrams is hard at work on the next Star Trek film.

Aside from the fact that the cast of the 2009 blockbuster will be reunited, not much is known about the next film at this time. However, Abrams seems very positive about its direction.

While Abrams has yet to officially sign on as director of the next Star Trek film, most industry insiders expect that it’s inevitable. He promises news regarding the film is on its way.

“I’m excited. We’re working hard. We’re very close and I hope to have something to talk about concretely soon. I do feel like if ‘Trek’ happens as we hope that it will, it will be a fun return to that group of people, because it’s an amazing group.” said Abrams.

quinto-star-trek-2-script

Zachary Quinto is ready to get back into Starfleet uniform and had a few words to say on the topic of the next Star Trek film, in a recent interview. During the interview with the Showbiz 411, Quinto talked about the anticipation for the upcoming sequel, what may be in store for his character Spock along with a few of the possible directions the story could go in.

“I feel like people are going to be ready for a second one by the time it comes out. It’s not like ‘Already’ ‘Really?’ ‘Again?’” Quinto said.

“I imagine we’re going to pick up right where we left off, but it could be a completely different timeline. They now basically created a device that allows them to go anywhere with it.”

“We could be in a parallel universe. We could be in a parallel time.” He remarked. “It’s the joy of science fiction. Vulcan could be back. Who knows.” he added.

Anton Yelchin on Star Trek 2 “I’m Ready”

Anton Yelchin talks Star Trek 2

Anton Yelchin, who took over the role of Pavel Chekov for JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek film, discussed his portrayal of the character, receiving Walter Koenig’s blessing, his reaction to the film along with his anticipation of the sequel, in a recent interview with StarTrek.com.

“I think it’s a great film. I think it’s a really good film. I think it’s a very enjoyable summer experience,” Yelchin said regarding the 2009 reboot. “It’s light and exciting, and everything works about it. I’m a big fan of everyone’s performances. And I’m pleased that people liked it, too.” he added.

Walter Koenig, as we know played Pavel Chekov in the second and third seasons of Star Trek along with the original films. On the topic of receiving Koenig’s blessing, Yelchin said “Oh, that was huge. When you’re taking on something that’s been made iconic by an individual, and for so many years, there’s always that sort of desire, I guess in some selfish way, to gain their approval.”

“It would suck if he came up to me and was like, “I f–king hate you. That was terrible, and I don’t like you.” That’d be awful. But I’m so glad that he liked the work that I did, and to meet him was really great. It was really a very important thing for me.” he added.

The highly-anticipated sequel and his character were the next topics of discussion.

“I trust the people that are writing it.” Yelchin said. “They wrote a good film and a good character the first time around, and I enjoyed doing that. So I trust that they’ll find some mission for me to do in the next one” he added.

“I’m ready. It’s been a while, but whenever they let me know, I’ll be there.” an excited Yelchin remarked.

The entire two-part interview is available at StarTrek.com.

JJ Abrams Says Star Trek 2 Will Be About “Starting Over”

JJ Abrams talks Star Trek 2

While promoting his new television series Person of Interest at the CBS Teen Choice Awards party on Sunday, Director JJ Abrams told MTV that the next Star Trek film will be about “starting over” and holding on to the things that worked in the first film.

On the topic of Star Trek 2, Abrams said “We met yesterday,” referring to his writing team of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. “We had a big, endless meeting and I think we’ll have something to talk about very soon.”

“I think within the next month or so we’ll be able to tell you what’s going on and when and all that,” Abrams teased.

“We’re working really hard and this is all to make sure that no one — cast, crew, mostly the audience — isn’t disappointed by what we do,”

When asked about the difficulties of writing a follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster, Abrams said “The odd thing about the first one we did is it was already sort of a sequel in a weird way,”.

He continued by saying “It was a reboot, but not. I think the most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter if anyone has seen the first one or not. It doesn’t matter what the first one was, in a way. This has to be a movie that stands on its own,”.

“You can’t just assume that everyone is going to love the characters because they are played by great actors, or they might have liked the first film. It’s really about starting over and at the same time, you really want to make sure you hold onto things that worked in the first one, so it’s the obvious stuff.” he said.

JJ Abrams on Star Trek 2: No One Wants to Take a Step Backwards

JJ Abrams

With the original release date of June 29, 2012 now scrapped, director JJ Abrams shed some light on the current status of the next Star Trek film, during a recent interview.

According to Abrams, both his team along with Paramount are focussed on the story and character development for the sequel and not jumping the gun to decide on locations, wardrobe, pre-production and visual effects budgets.

“There have been a lot of things that we’ve been working on, a lot of important elements that we just know we need to really nail down and solve.” Abrams said.

“Once you say, “We’re ready to go, but we don’t have a finished script yet,” or “I’m directing the thing and here’s the release date, but we don’t have a finished script,” what starts to happen – and I’ve seen this happen with a lot of friends of mine – is that you’re suddenly in production on a movie that they’re thinking, “Oh my god, we weren’t really ready. We thought we’d get it done in time, but we didn’t.” So, while we have a moment to say, “Let’s get the important things figured out,” then all the pre-production stuff will come. But, I just want to make sure that we’re putting the story and the characters, the cast and the crew, and most importantly the audience, first before we start talking about exactly which locations we’re going to be shooting at and what the wardrobe and visual effects budgets are.”

Regarding Paramount’s reaction to the delay of the film, Abrams said “All they care about – and I had this discussion very recently with Rob Moore – is that the movie be good. No one wants to take a step backwards.”

No Set Start Date for Star Trek Sequel According to Orci & Kurtzman

Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman

Star Trek 2 is still without an announced start-of-production date, a release date or even a confirmed title. However, co-writers and producers Alex Kutzman and Roberto Orci recently shed some light on their mindset going into the sequel and their thoughts on rushing the film to theaters.

“I’ve heard so many things mentioned, but we have so much… it’s a matter of someone putting the date on paper and saying, “We’re starting.”" Orci said.

Regarding rushing the film to theaters, Kurtzman said “You just don’t want to do that, especially on a movie that we all love so much and has high expectations.”

“Rushing means more expensive, and that’s a question for our benefactors, who have to decide how bad they want it in terms of that kind of stuff.” Orci said.

Zachary Quinto Talks the Spock-Uhura Relationship, Villains, and Rebuilding the Vulcan Race

Zachary Quinto

Zachary Quinto answered a few questions regarding the next Star Trek film, which is slated to begin shooting later this year, during a recent interview with io9.

While Quinto has yet to read a script for the film, he does speculate on where he believes both his character and the Spock-Uhura relationship may be headed. He also discusses repopulating the Vulcan race and what he’s excited for in the next film.

When asked about Spock’s journey in the next film, Quinto said “I wonder about that. I would imagine (this is just speculative), his planet’s been destroyed, he feels a real imperative to rebuild his race. But he’s in love with a human. There’s probably some potential conflict in that dynamic, I would not be surprised, and I would be intrigued and excited by that if that were the case. Again, I have such implicit trust in all of those guys: Damon, Bob and Alex, and J.J. I feel like they’re going to take us where we need to go. And we’re going to follow them whole-heartedly.”

“I don’t see how they could just drop it. It may be fraught, I don’t know!” Quinto said, when asked about the Spock-Uhura romance.

When asked about being one of the last Vulcans, Quinto said “He’s not the only Vulcan, I think I said, “Of my planet’s nearly 6 billion inhabitants, approximately 10,000 have survived.” He’s not the only one. But the odds aren’t great. He has a bit of a cultural imperative to [help].”

“He turned his back by choosing not to go to the Vulcan Science Academy, but his culture has always been a very important part of who he is. It’s an integral part of his internal fabric. I think if he’s wrestling with feelings of guilt for having sort of embraced his humanity, then an event like this is the great equalizer, it levels the playing field. I don’t think he’s going to spend too much time feeling guilty. I think he’s going to spend a lot more time doing the logical thing. Which is to help repopulate, help support, and help rebuild the race of people. His father was full full Vulcan, and he has a responsibility there, and he loves his father very much. I don’t think he’s that torn about it. I think he’s done the best he can to straddle a really complicated circumstance.”

“I’m interested to see what the villain situation is. What are we fighting against, what is our mission? That’s going to be really cool for me. I’m really excited to see the direction in which they take my character in general. I’m excited to see when this movie takes place, in juxtaposition to when we ended the first one. Where do we pick back up? What’s happened to the characters since then? My sense is what’s the dynamic like between Kirk and Spock? Is it all smooth sailing? I imagine that they’re both so strongly willed, that there will be some continued friction… I’m just excited to read it and shoot it.” he said, regarding what he’s excited to see in the sequel.

With the launch of Super 8 a few weeks behind him, Deadline is reporting that JJ Abrams is all but officially signed on to direct the sequel to the 2009 Star Trek film.

According to the report, Abrams recently returned from vacation and is ready to get to work on the script with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof for the next Star Trek film.

With production expected to begin in January 2012, the idea of the film being ready for a June release just won’t be possible. Instead, Paramount will move the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson, to the June 29th spot.

As we reported previously, the expected release date for the next Trek film will either be winter 2012 or summer 2013.
