LeVar Burton Confirms TNG is Coming to Blu-Ray in HD

levar-burton-tng2

In news that will surely have Star Trek: The Next Generation fans excited, it looks as though CBS is indeed moving forward with the conversion of at least a portion of the series to high-definition.

As we reported in July, CBS is working on a four episode sampler disc, to see how the episodes would look in HD and how costly it would be to remaster the audio and video.

On Friday, LeVar Burton all but confirmed that TNG is being converted to hi-definition for Blu-Ray release. On Twitter, Burton said “Stopped by to see how the TNG conversion to HD for Blue Ray was coming along… #mindblown” along with a photo of the front gate of CBS Television City in Los Angeles.

While I don’t believe this completely confirms that the entire seven seasons will be re-released in HD on Blu-Ray, it does validate previous reports of the sampler disc, which is a step in the right direction.

According to a report on Digital Bits, the Blu-Ray sampler disc will contain “Encounter at Farpoint”, along with three other episodes.

We’ll of course keep you updated on any news related to TNG’s conversion to HD, as news becomes available.

Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation Music Collection Vol. 1

star-trek-tng-music-collection

It has been said that film music is like a story book. It is full of moods and color, it can make you laugh, cry, feel happy, sorrow, and myriad of other human emotions. Part of what made Star Trek: The Next Generation so successful was the music that carried the episodes spanning the seven years the show was on the air.

Over the years, several composers have contributed to the Star Trek saga, and only a selected few have had any press in terms of a soundtrack album. The 1980s and 90′s were not kind times to fans of film music, and fans of Star Trek music weren’t any exception. In 2011 however, that is not the case. Enter La-La-Land Records, and their spectacular release of their limited edition 3-CD set, Star Trek: The Next Generation Collection, Volume 1. Even Data would approve!

First and foremost, I noticed the packaging. I think it’s safe to say that I am a sucker for presentation. Going by the presentation alone, I had a feeling this set would be good. The set comes in a 3-CD jewel case, with artwork featuring the famous LCARS graphics seen in nearly every episode of the Next Generation. This was a labor of love made for Trekkies (and everyone else). The 32-page booklet included is written by Star Trek movie historians Jeff Bond and Lukas Kendall, who give an excellent insight into the history, the composers, and music of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It makes a great guide to read along with a listen.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Music Collection interior

Speaking of listening…

Enter the music. Each of the 3 CDs are broken down by composers:

Disk 1 by Dennis McCarthy
Disc 2 by Jay Chattaway
Disc 3 by Fred Steiner, Don Davis and John Debney

All three composers are represented well, with highlights from several episodes from all seven seasons. I found the music to be quite enjoyable and refreshing, and in some cases new as there are episodes featured on this set that I have not seen. It was truly a trip down memory lane.

The set features many “holy grails” for Trek and film fans alike, such as the famous Lullaby from “The Inner Light”, Scotty’s Bridge from “Relics” the Main Titles (with Patrick Stewart narration) a polka version of the Alexander Courage theme, and several of the many “bumpers” heard before the commercial breaks. For myself, the latter, this was a real treat! For years I wondered if the bumpers were simply studio edits, or actual pieces of music performed. Just imagine a full orchestra performing a full 10 seconds of a theme!

La-La-Land truly went all out in making this set. Clocking in with over 3 hours of music, this set is guaranteed to keep any Trekkie happy for years to come.

This set is truly worth getting, and a worthy memento for any Star Trek fan. So sit back, relax, and let your ears be taken where no ears have gone before!

Box Presentation: 4 out of 5 stars

Leonard Nimoy & John de Lancie Re-Release “Alien Voices” Through Digital Download

Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie

Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie have announced the re-release of their sci-fi/fantasy audio drama series Alien Voices through digital download.

These five original episodes, previously out of print, star Nimoy and de Lancie, along with other Star Trek regulars, such as Roxann Dawson (Voyager), Robert Ellenstein (Star Trek IV), Marnie Mosiman (TNG), Andrew Robinson (DS9), Dwight Shultz (TNG/Voyager), Armin Shimerman (TNG), Ethan Phillips (TNG/Voyager/Enterprise) Kate Mulgrew (Voyager) and even feature a cameo by the one and only William Shatner.

The project, originally launched in 1996, was born from Nimoy’s desire to “branch out” and work independently of Trek and de Lancie’s affinity for the works of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and similar authors of science fiction genre, whose works they use as a basis for their dramatizations.

Episodes are available for digital download individually for $9.99 on the official Alien Voices website.

ABOUT ALIEN VOICES
ALIEN VOICES was formed in 1996 by actors Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie to create multi-media works of science fiction and fantasy. ALIEN VOICES grew out of a long-held desire to present thoughtful and provocative works of science fiction.

“After years of being associated with other people’s projects we wanted to enter the nest century at the helm of our own,” said Leonard Nimoy, best known for his portrayal of Star Trek’s Mr. Spock. “ALIEN VOICES gives us the chance to work with other artists who also want to branch out, yet still provide audiences with the quality they’ve come to expect from us.”

John de Lancie, whose recurring role as “Q” in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager made him the series’ most popular guest star, explained, “I was raised on the classics – Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and others. Now we can bring these to even wider audiences by means of new technologies and old friends. We at Alien Voices feel that the dramatization should remain faithful to the original works. We are presenting Verne, Wells and other giants of the science fiction genre as they, themselves, might have wished to be heard.”

Alien Voices can be found on the World Wide Web at: www.alienvoices.net

star-trek-tng-blu-ray

The folks over at Digital Bits are reporting that CBS is moving forward with Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-Ray, with a release in 2012. According to the report, a four-episode “best of” disc is currently in the works.

The report says “Multiple sources I spoke with at Comic-Con have also confirmed our report from earlier this year that CBS is hard at work on Star Trek: The Next Generation – Remastered for Blu-ray release starting sometime in 2012. The latest word is that 4 test episodes are currently being worked on for release as a sampler/demo BD disc of the project, and that sampler disc will somehow be available to fans by the end of this year. Watch for additional news in the months ahead.”

We’ll have more on this as news becomes available.
