Patrick Stewart: “Star Trek is Simply a Phenomenon”

Last weekend, Patrick Stewart, along with Jonatahn Frakes, Brent Spiner and LeVar Burton, appeared at Creation Entertainment’s tribute to the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as part of the Official Star Trek Convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Stewart appeared in front of the New Jersey audience on Saturday as he discussed both his career and his personal experiences playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard, both in TNG and in the TNG-era Star Trek films. Stewart was very forthcoming regarding some regrets he has from the way he balanced his personal and professional life.

I worked very hard. I was actually too dedicated to my work. I overlooked family — often, and I regret that. I now try to make that up with my grandchildren.

People said ‘You were driven, Patrick,’ I don’t recognize who they were talking about. I just wanted to go on working. I didn’t feel driven.

I love my job. I love it! I love it as much — even more today as I ever did. I enjoy my life too. I feel infinitely blessed for the multitude of things I have been given, that I didn’t look for.

Stewart appeared in four Star Trek feature films, Generations in 1994, First Contact in 1996, Insurrection in 1998, and Nemesis in 2002. While a large group of fans would love to see him appear in a J.J. Abrams-era Star Trek film, he feels the chances of that are slim.

What would I do if I was asked to be in another Star Trek movie?

I hope I’d say yes. I don’t expect that to happen, however.

The other guys are doing such a great job with their movie — and they’ve got another one in the works — and that’s fantastic. Star Trek is simply a phenomenon.

The weekend prior, Stewart along with the cast of The Next Generation, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Denise Crosby, and Wil Wheaton, appeared on stage together for the first official time at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.

We were talking about it last weekend when we were all together. There really isn’t anything in the history of show business like it. It’s going on 60 years now. This franchise — Star Trek — and look at where it’s going.

It’s extraordinary.

Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes on the set of Star Trek: First Contact

Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes on the set of Star Trek: First Contact

I am thrilled to see the torch being passed, because fundamentally the ethos of Star Trek, the philosophy of Star Trek is admirable — and let’s face it; there is a lot of stuff around in the show business world that is not admirable. Star Trek is.

While on stage, a fan asked Stewart if he would like to appear in an animated version of TNG.

Only if Set McFarlane would write it,

He went on to discuss how he was chosen for the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard on TNG.

It was an accident that I got involved in The Next Generation — It was a fluke. I was helping out a dear friend of mine — a Shakespeare scholar, a teacher in the English department at UCLA, one night by illustrating his public lecture, by doing some readings. Signed up for that course of public lectures, was a man named Robert Justman — who was one of the Executive Producers of The Original SeriesStar Trek — and The Next Generation.

Robert Justman apparently turned to his wife and said ‘We have found the Captain.’

Con Report: New Jersey Star Trek Convention with Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton & More

Con Report: New Jersey Star Trek Convention with Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton & More

Star Trek fans from all corners of the galaxy gathered together last weekend for Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Conventionin Cherry Hill, New Jersey just outside Philadelphia. Several TNG actors were on hand, including Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner and LeVar Burton to kick off the 25th Anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation celebration this year.

On Saturday, the guest of honor, Patrick Stewart stepped on stage to a standing ovation. Wearing a t-shirt that proclaimed “Magneto was right!” and looking as fit as ever. Stewart told the audience he enjoys being a “Sir” and has a new movie that will go into production this June. Stewart said he plans to re-focus on his film and television career after about 8 years of satisfying theatrical work. He also revealed that he has written a series of essays that he may organize into a loose sort of autobiography at some point, although he found the process of writing them “laborious.”

In addition to theater and writing, he said he enjoys some amateur astronomy viewing planets and stars on his property in rural England. Throughout his presentation, Patrick engaged in a continued faux putdown of Canadians, which included a fake shock at the “revelation” that Bill Shatner is Canadian. A more serious revelation was his admission that he was Bob Justman’s pick for Captain Picard, but not Gene Roddenberry’s. Fortunately, Bob, Rick Berman and others convinced Gene to agree with their choice. What Patrick enjoyed the most about his seven years of filming TNG was the continual examination of thoughts and ideas regarding human nature. He said the recurring motif of his TNG tenure was laughter while filming and having a great time while getting the job done.

Stewart went on to share some insight into his time on TNG along with the success he’s found over his career.

“I don’t quite know how this came about. I know I like it.” Stewart said laughing. “I work very hard. I was actually too dedicated to my work. I overlooked family — often, and I regret That. I now try to make that up with my grandchildren.”

Earlier in the weekend, Suzie Plakson who played Worf’s mate, K’Ehleyr, on TNG, greeted the fans. She shared that she keeps in touch with several Trek cast members but particularly enjoyed working with Michael Dorn. “He was a doll,” Ms. Plakson said. Initially, she was asked to try out for a Vulcan doctor and she played Dr. Selar in “The Schizoid Man . Ms. Plakson even wore Vulcan makeup when casting producer Junie Lowry spotted her. Out of that came the opportunity to play Worf’s half Human, half Klingon love interest in “The Emissary” and again in the episode “Reunion.” The one thing she was not completely pleased with was her Q costume for her role as the The Female Q in the Voyager episode “The Q and the Grey,” which she thought should have had more “boobage!”. Ms. Plakson has also played Tarah, an Andorian in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode “Cease Fire.”

Richard Arnold, who was a long-time assistant to Gene Rodenberry, presented comprehensive presentation on the history and production of TNG. Arnold showed archival images of several of the cast as directors, including Gates McFadden, Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton and Jonathan Frakes and discussed budgeting problems for TNG, especially as the show was approaching its finale and Deep Space Nine was about to start. He also told stories about Whoopi Goldberg’s participation, which often resulted in a virtual lockdown for the cast and crew because she was so rarely available that, whenever she was, all work with her had to be done.

Gary Graham of Star trek: Enterprise and Alien Nation

Gary Graham of Star trek: Enterprise and Alien Nation

Gary Graham, who played the Vulcan Ambassador Soval on Enterprise, shared stories from his time on Star Trek, including his satisfaction with the Soval character, because his conflict with his own belief system transformed him into a heroic character. Gary recently got cast as Matt Sykes on Alien Nation, after it went down to just him and the comedian Colin Quinn. Gary had worked with Ken Johnson on an episode of The Incredible Hulk and he felt confident about the casting meeting and first audition.

The next guest was Morgan Gendel, who wrote the TNG favorite “The Inner Light,” an episode where Captain Picard lives a completely different life, experiences romance and has the memories of a man from a different race beamed into his mind. The memories beamed into his mind may have represented an idealized version of the alien society whose lifestyle he had the opportunity to experience, Gendel analyzed, much like we may send out an informational video into space revealing the best and proudest moments of human society. In writing the episode, Morgan was inspired by his observation of the Fuji blimp which he extrapolated into the probe n the episode. The writer explained that he had to pitch the concept to Michael Piller five times before the episode was fleshed out. He also presented an exclusive peek at his new graphic novel. Morgan’s appearance ended with a wonderful video homage to 45 years of Star Trek set to John Chattaway’s timeless music piece for this episode.

Star Trek: Voyager's Tim Russ

Star Trek: Voyager's Tim Russ

Tim Russ, who fans remember as Tuvok on Voyager, said that he relates to his character very much, especially when he is at airports around the world with illogical directional signs. Once, when traveling to a convention in England, he was in fact so confused that he had an embarrassing time explaining to a customs officer where he was staying and who was picking him up. Tim Russ currently plays the principal on iCarly.

Robin Curtis and Eric Menyuk

Robin Curtis and Eric Menyuk

Following this scholarly presentation, Eric Menyuk and Robin Curtis appropriately performed a hilarious spoof dressed as nerdy Trek fans in TOS uniforms and Spock ears. After searching the audience for their “seats,” they settled on stage and began a reminiscence of the Trek celebrities they had seen at conventions: for example, Robin Curtis, who had a restraining order against Nerdy Robin. Nerdy Eric found another celebrity, pulling a poor member of the audience on stage, declaring him “the blob from Season 3″ and proceeded to declare that this man “gushed with blobbiness!” They also asked the audience some funny trivia questions in a hopeless “battle of the sexes” and later engaged in a duel with baguettes placed between their legs.

On Sunday, LeVar Burton was greeted with a standing ovation. Like Patrick Stewart, LeVar said that filming TNG combined work with laughter (“we were always laughing”) and answered several questions about TNG and his character’s famous visor. Then, he suddenly had a fan repeat the same question in a suspiciously irritating nasal voice. The “fan” turned to be no other than Brent Spiner who proceeded to ask if LeVar was the actor he had seen in the TV show “Ritz.” LeVar said yes, he had appeared in Roots. SGF said that he could identify with Kunta Kinte because he was a black man, too. As the audience was roaring, a raucous Jonathan Frakes asked whether Patrick Stewart’s accent was real or fake and LeVar reported it was fake.

LeVar Burton talks TNG and the all-new Reading Rainbow

LeVar is currently working on Perception, a new TNT series with Eric McCormack from Will & Grace, coming to TNT. His educational show Reading Rainbow is also returning, this time as a free app for the tablet, and eventually for Android mobile devices. The app will offer a subscription-based financial model, with hundreds of book titles available each month for parents to download for their kids.

While on stage, a fan asked him if he thought Rick Berman had honored the original vision of Star Trek after Gene Roddenberry’s passing in 1991.

“I think he stayed very true to Gene’s vision and honored the template that Gene had established,” said Burton

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Leeta, Chase Masterson

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Leeta, Chase Masterson

Chase Masterson spoke about her role as Leeta on Deep Space Nine. She loved working Max Grodenchik, who played the fans’ favorite Ferengi, Rom. It turns out that Max, quite a baseball player, had to play left-handed in order to actually appear awkward player for the episode “Take “Me Out to The Holosuite,” where the Enterprise crew engages in an epic baseball battle against a sturdy and cold-blooded Vulcan team. Chase also revealed that at the close of the series, she got a hold of Dr. Bashir’s medicine cabinet (which would have gone into the trash). Chase told the fans that she has recently done some Shakespeare plays, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She provided quite a treat with some of her beautiful song stylings, including Peggy Lee’s “Fever” and “Pure Imagination” and spoke about her charitable work with several challenged-children’s groups.

LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes

Finally, the time had come for the much-anticipated finale: Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner as a comic duo, which never fails to entertain. After Frakes walked in singing “Volare,” which the audience answered in turn, Spiner started a long series of Patrick Stewart putdowns, all in Patrick’s distinct voice. Frakes and Spiner also managed to answer some “serious” questions about TNG and even discussed the famous personalities who had visited them during their seven-year tenure, including Madeleine Albright, Stephen Hawking, Ronald Reagan and Mick Fleetwood. Then, out of nowhere, a nerdy voice called out to Spiner and said his favorite episodes of TNG featured Geordi: LeVar Burton joined the duo and added to the continuous barbs aimed at Patrick Stewart. A standing ovation saw off the trio.

The Convention concluded with a showing of Gene Roddenberry’s personal TOS blooper reel. A final presentation involved the audience in discussing possible plots for the next Star Trek film.

Next year, Creation’s Northeast convention returns to the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, May 3-5, 2013, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Deep Space Nine.

Calgary Expo Report: Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast Reunion [PICS]

Calgary Expo Report: Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast Reunion

The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo that occurred this past weekend had its fair share of exciting guests and panels spanning the subjects of television, comics, and movies. However, inarguably the biggest event of the weekend came with the reunion of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation in celebration of the show’s 25th anniversary. The cast took questions from the audience, shared memories of the show, and were treated to a few surprises along the way.

The panel began with a swing style big band playing the cast in with specialized introductions. Sir Patrick Stewart, who played the fan favorite Captain Pickard, received an elongated intro with the Calgary native host introducing him as “One of the greatest actors of stage and screen and certainly one of the sexiest bald men alive.”  Once the crowd was calmed, Stewart recalled that the last time he and the cast had gathered all together was a party to celebrate his knighthood.

The cast began the panel by recalling the early days in the show. Marina Sirtis, who played Deanna Troi, recalled that the show had not always been as big a hit with Trekkies. “You’re all cheering now,” said Siritis “But when we started you weren’t happy.” The cast then took turns telling stories about some of the humorous beginnings in the shows rise into popularity, including Jonathan Frakes, who played William Riker, recalling a convention when every action figure of the cast came with “a free Riker action figure.” The cast went on to remember some of the more disgusting and uncomfortable props and sets that they had to deal with during the show’s lifespan, including a constantly used low cave landscape in which stray cats constantly defecated.

Once the cast was done talking about the hardships and learning experiences of the early days, they went on to describe the more successful time period of the show. Will Wheaton, who played the young Wesley Crusher, talked about how excited he was when they began shoot two part episodes and Gates McFadden, the Enterprises’ Doctor Beverly Crusher, thanked the fans personally for “Keeping me on the show.”

Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden and LeVar Burton

The cast also answered questions given to them by five contest winners within the crowd of fans. During this session, surprise guest Aaron Douglas (Glen Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica) was able to give his thanks to the cast for the inspiration he had taken from all of them and also to have a fan service argument with Wil Wheaton over the different theories of how the Warp Drive functioned. John De Lancie, who played the antagonist Q, also made a surprise guest appearance during a section where the cast was asked about their favorite villains from the show.

The panel was not without its emotional moments. Wil Wheaton reminisced what it was like to leave the show and the feelings of shame he had to deal with after the fact. Michael Dorn, who played the emotionless and hard boiled Worf, remembered his emotional breakdown during the final episode’s filming stating “I had never cried so much in my life.”

The entire cast ended the panel by saying how lucky they were to have the time they had had together and thanked all the fans that were present for supporting them as much as they did.

WATCH: Tips On Surviving Your Next Star Trek Convention with the Trekkie Girls

Trekkie Girls

English video bloggers and major Star Trek fans, the Trekkie Girls, have released a new multi-part episode in which they discuss tips, ticks, and hints on how to get the most out of your next Star Trek convention experience — including when and when not to wear spandex.

While the Trekkie Girls, Sam and Carole, focus on the upcoming Destination Star Trek London convention, their tips on which tickets to purchase and what you should wear can be utilized for almost any convention outing.

Official episode description:

You spoke, we listened. You want to hear about Cosplaying so here is everything we know. British sci-fi fans are no longer the reserved stereotype. Once we put on our com badge and ridges we become as overt as a Dabo Girl on the Venus drug.

When it comes to picking what you want to wear. Decide now. Don’t leave it until two weeks before to decide that you want to dress up as some sort of Nausicaan/vedek hybrid. Dressing up needs planning, planning, planning.

Star Trek: Live! Stage Play Coming to St. Louis in May

Star Trek Stage Play Coming to St. Louis

Once a year, St. Louis Shakespeare’s The Magic Smoking Monkey Theater picks a cult film to adapt into a stage parody. The talented Smoking Monkeys have already presented Reefer Madness, Glen or Glenda and Star Wars.

A logical addition to this impressive list of movie spoofs, Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock’s appearance on the Magic Smoking Theater stage seems long overdue, not to mention the presence of McCoy, Chekhov, and Uhura, who can add more personality to any show.

That’s why, this year, the Smoking Monkeys are going “where no monkey has gone before” by presenting two Star Trek Original Series episodes: The Gamesters of Triskelion and Journey to Babel. As true Star Trek classics, these episodes transport us into a universe of discovery and conquer, encounters with the unknown, adventure and self-revelation.

In “The Gamesters” episode, Captain Kirk declares: “My people pride themselves on being the greatest, most successful gamblers in the universe. We compete for everything — power, fame, women — everything we desire, and it is our nature … to win.” To reveal this passion and prowess live, Jim Ousley plays Kirk, while Ed Cole portrays the seemingly cold-blooded Mr. Spock. We also get to spend time with Suki Peters as Shanha (known to Trekkies as The Bustiest Alien in the Galaxy!)

Shanha
Shanha

In “Journey to Babel,” Amy Kelly plays Spock’s mother, Amanda, who tries to remind Mr. Spock of his humanity, by saying “After all these years among humans, you still haven’t learned to smile.”

In the original episode, Amanda, played in the Original Series by the star of Father Knows Best, Jane Wyman, also provokes the following cult exchange between Spock and his father Sarek:

Spock: Emotional, isn’t she?

Sarek: She has always been that way.

Spock: Indeed? Why did you marry her?

Sarek: At the time, it seemed the logical thing to do.

The Star Trek show for 12 performances: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 & 19 at 8pm and 10:30pm at the stage at the Regional Arts Commission, 6128 Delmar Blvd in University City. The show takes place in conjunction with the St. Louis Science Center’s “Star Trek – the Exhibition.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Brown Paper Tickets and are priced at $15 general admission or $10 for students 18 and under.

Star Trek Transporter App & Bus Shelters in Calgary

Star Trek Transporter App

Of all the iconic science fiction technology synonymous with Star Trek, possibly most recognizable is the teleporter. A somewhat temperamental machine, the device has sent the several different crews of the series to alien planets, enemy ships, and (on its bad days) mirror universes. Now with Star Trek: The Next Generation celebrating its 25th anniversary, the town of Vulcan, Alberta has teamed up with The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and E-Axis to bring one of Star Trek’s most beloved staples into reality with a promotional Transporter app for iPhone and iPad.

Two displays have been set up in Calgary, AB bus shelters by the Ontario based tech company E-Axis and the Vulcan Tourism Bureau. The displays implements Augmented Reality technology using an app available for iPhone and iPad, allowing fans to take pictures of themselves and their friends in front of the display and simulate the famous transport sequence on the display screen.

On top of the initial two bus shelters, a third display will be made available at the Vulcan Tourism booth at the The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo (April 27th-29th), an event that will also host the first reunion of the principle cast of The Next Generation in over two decades in celebration of the shows anniversary.

The displays will be available in Calgary until the end of April, when they will be sent to Vulcan, AB and set as a permanent display in honor of the city’s annual Star Trek celebration, Spock Days (June 8th, 9th, and 10th). There, additional features will be added to the app including guided scavenger hunts and science tours for guests of the celebration.

The current displays are available at the bus stops at 9th Ave/2 Street and 4 street/17 Ave in Calgary.
