Merchandise News: Star Trek HeroClix + Mr. Potato Heads

star-trek-potato-heads

WizK!ds, the company that recently released the Star Trek: Fleet Captains and Star Trek: Encounter cooperative games, announced this week a new Star Trek HeroClix game called Star Trek: HeroClix: Tactics.

Players will either control Klingon or Federation starships during strategic battles and events that are compatible with the HeroClix core rule systems. Tactics includes more than 20 painted ships that are collected in the 4 ship starter set and as single figure boosters. Star Trek now joins such venerable franchises as DC Superheroes and Marvel Comics which have been popular HeroClix games for almost a decade.

The starter set will include 4 starships, 2 theme dice, a rulebook, a powers/ability card, and two full color maps and is available for order at gaming stores, comic shops, and online beginning in February 2012.

Kirk & Kor Potato Heads
Kirk & Kor Potato Heads

In other merchandise news, available this week at retailers is the PPW Toy company’s Captain Kirk/Kor Mr. Potato Head two pack. The two pack includes the traditional interchangeable clothes, faces, hair, and shoes, yet themed around Star Trek characters.

Those who purchased the Star Wars Mr. Potato Heads a few years ago may be surprised that Mr. Potato Heads have shrunk some in size and are appreciably smaller.

Spock & Uhura Potato Heads
Spock & Uhura Potato Heads

Despite this scale change, there is much to like about these fun items. The packaging begins the fun with descriptions on the back proclaiming that Captain Kirk Mr. Potato Head includes his signature smirk and Kor’s intimidating facial gestures. Kor is especially nice, and while PPW could have taken shortcuts, they have paid attention to details with an example being the differing boots of the characters. A Spock and Uhura two-pack is available beginning this November to continue the fun.

To order Kirk and Kor or Spock and Uhura, visit Entertainment Earth.

Report: Creation’s Chicago Star Trek Convention with Nimoy, Frakes, Spiner & More

jonathan-frakes

This weekend, Star Trek history was made as Leonard Nimoy attended his last convention as a guest and retires after almost 40 years of con appearances.

Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek 45th Anniversary Convention in Rosemont, Illinois, was the site of an exciting variety of guests and an emotional weekend of events. Here is a summary of some of the best moments:

FRIDAY:

Creation co-owner Adam Malin presided as host during the annual Chicago Star Trek convention. Malin’s genuine enthusiasms for Trek and science fiction add much to Creation’s Star Trek events as he guides fans through costume contests, guest introductions, auctions, trivia competitions, and the general convention experience. As Star Trek is celebrating its 45th Anniversary, Creation Entertainment has its own 40 year celebration this year.

The first talk of the weekend was by Richard Arnold, the former assistant to Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek consultant who showed very rare photos from the original show.

Then, Dominic Keating appeared on stage, sharing with fans stories of how he got the role of Malcolm Reed and what it was like to audition for the studio executives. A fun anecdote shared by Keating is that John Billingsley’s initial interpretation of Dr. Phlox was that of a bird like alien who squawked when excited.

John DeLancie discussed his Alien Voices famous science fiction narrative audio dramas produced along with Leonard Nimoy during the 1990s and early 2000s, which are now available for download at http://alienvoices.net/ and featuring many Star Trek actors. He also spoke about his appearance in the original 1970s Battlestar Galactica, telling the funny story of how he got the role and quickly found himself in the middle of a desert with a wild costume and a hoard of people chasing at him.

Connor Trinneer
Connor Trinneer

Connor Trinneer rounded out the day with his appearance. He discussed the differences between his characters of Charles Tucker from Enterprise and Michael from the Stargate programs. Fan participation events included a Yes/No trivia game which was made all the more exciting because for the first time, a Star Trek contestant won all three rounds with a perfect score and earned a more than $1700 prize! The evening was completed with a party featuring Keating, Trinneer, and DeLancie in attendance.

SATURDAY:

Saturday had perhaps the greatest surprise of the weekend. While much of the energy of the convention was directed anticipating Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols was also an absolutely joyous guest. Her stories of how she met Gene Roddenberry, got the part of Uhura, helped name the character, and her especially touching discussion of how racial prejudice affected her in the role resulted in a truly emotional highlight of the convention. There were few dry eyes in the house as this genuine role model left the stage.

Richard Arnold returned with a second talk showing amazing photos celebrating the history of Star Trek.

Punctuating the afternoon was the exceptionally funny antics of Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner. Beginning with Spiner imitating Patrick Stewart to joking about the first time they saw their action figures, these two have a genuine and easy rapport which translates into laughs and a good time for all. A common theme among all three guests this day was the personal and friendly connection they made with fans during autograph sessions and on stage.

Spiner announced that he was filming more episodes of his web program Fresh Hell. The fan participation event was a costume contest, the largest in many years in Chicago with a variety of truly original entries, from a Gorn in a business suit, to a Stormtrooper in a Red Shirt with a sign proclaiming peace between the franchises, to an amazing and grand prize winning Borg Ferengi.

SUNDAY:

Beginning with a charity breakfast, the impressive guest list continued at the convention with Rene Auberjonois and Nana Visitor spending time with fans. The duo treated audiences to a performance of love poetry and quotations in an excellent rendition Cross Our Hearts performance, including the rare treat of seeing them perform their DS9 characters during the event.

Both are warm and fan friendly, earnestly answering questions with good humor and kindness. Fans then discussed their hopes for the Star Trek sequel in a fun participation panel.

Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy’s final convention appearance started with an amazing surprise exclusive video featuring all the cast of the new Star Trek (2009) movie and director JJ Abrams sharing their good wishes and roasting Nimoy on his retirement.

Leonard Nimoy

Nimoy appeared on stage to thunderous applause and began to tell his life story through words and photos. Interesting facts included his two years in the military as a infantry solider and how as a cab driver he once drove then Senator John F. Kennedy and the two discussed acting and politics. The advice that future President Kennedy gave Nimoy, that there is always room for one more good actor, was an inspiration to Nimoy.

Leonard Nimoy

As Nimoy left the stage, the audience all produced signs saying “We love you Leonard!  Live Long and Prosper!” to which Nimoy appeared very moved. He waved once last time, and exited the stage. Nimoy then asked that a cake that Creation had made for him be shared with the entire audience.

The weekend was fun filled with fan friendly guests and talks running the gamut of emotions, from tears to laughter. The convention was an honor to attend as it represented a passage in Star Trek fan history as both the past and future of Star Trek was celebrated.

A Look Back at Ten Years of Enterprise Collectibles

star-trek-enterprise

For most fans 2011 will be remembered as the 45th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, this year is also of significance to another Star Trek series.

Star Trek: Enterprise premiered on September 26th, 2001, making this year the tenth anniversary.

Back in 2001, 12.5 million viewers welcomed Enterprise when it premiered UPN. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the show, here are some of the collectibles that helped introduce the world to the newest version of Star Trek.

Action Figures

Art Asylum’s inaugural line of Star Trek action figures was for Enterprise.  Eventually, the Art Asylum/Diamond Select Toys line of 7” figures would number more than 100 items.  The Enterprise line included two versions of most of the crew (away team suits and regular Starfleet regalia), and Shran, Silik, Klaang, and a Naussican. Deluxe version Jonathan Archer, T’Pol, and Malcolm Reed action figures included a section of the NX01 bridge with sounds.

There was to be a third line of Enterprise figures from Art Asylum that would have included a Travis Mayweather Deluxe Action Figure, a Hoshi Sato in standard Enterprise outfit, and Dr. Phlox in standard medical outfit, yet the line was cancelled before the figures were available. Photos of the prototypes are available at the New Force Comics Star Trek Action Figure Reference.

Role Play

Art Asylum also released a phaser and communicator role playing toys which featured lights and sounds from the show which could be worn with the Rubies Enterprise costumes. More recently, Roddenberry.com offers detailed prop versions of the phaser and communicator.

The NX-01

The NX-01 Enterprise has been released in a variety of versions during the past decade.  The first was the Art Asylum toy ship which was a very detailed model with lights and sounds. Mirror Universe and Battle Damaged variants followed.  From 2004 to 2008, Johnny Lightning also released the NX-01 in its small toy line in various forms. The NX-01 is also available from Round 2/Polar Lights as a model (which could also be reconfigured as the Columbia). During 2009, Hot Wheels released the NX01 in what the company calls their 1:50 scale line.

Soundtracks

The music from “Broken Bow” was released on CD in 2002 featuring music from Dennis McCarthy, including the excellent, yet rarely heard, end credits “Archer’s Theme.”

Books

As with all versions of Star Trek, Pocket Books has released and continues to release various Enterprise EU books.  Enterprise is also featured in Star Trek 101 the episode guide for newer fans and the Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Haynes Guide from 2010. To date, there has never been an Enterprise comic book, the only version of Star Trek for this to be true.

Games

2009’s Star Trek Monopoly, Scene It?, and Top Trumps games include Enterprise cards, game pieces, questions, and character arts. The Star Trek: Encounters and Star Trek: Legacy video games have Enterprise content.

Cards

Rittenhouse Cards released sets for each of the four seasons of Enterprise, and the entire cast signed autograph cards. There have also been some Rittenhouse trading card sets that feature all versions of Star Trek together, such as the 40th Anniversary cards, and Enterprise is of course included.  The Danbury Mint’s gold cards also have Enterprise cards.

Trek the Halls This Holiday Season with New Ornaments from Hallmark [Video]

star-trek-ornaments

For thirty years Star Trek ornament have been produced by Hallmark. This year they’ll add four new additions to their lineup. Three have been made available at local Hallmark stores and a fourth, based on the TOS episode “The Tholian Web,” will be available only at New York Comic-Con in October.

Read about this year’s holiday offerings along with a preview for next year, below.

Spock ($14.95)

In 2010, Hallmark started a new line of ornaments called Star Trek Legends based on the crew of the original Star Trek, beginning with with Captain Kirk. Logically, this year the second ornament in the line is Mr. Spock. Sculpted by artist Anita Marra Rogers, the ornament features the science officer scanning with his tricorder.

Mirror, Mirror ($29.95)

Continuing a line of ornaments that began in 2004 based on famous moments from original Star Trek episodes, the new “Mirror, Mirror” ornament by Valerie Shanks has alternate Spock mind melding with Dr. McCoy. Leonard Nimoy’s dialog from the episode is included, as are sound effects from the show. The ornament is about tall, with detailed paneling of the I.S.S. Enterprise and the inclusion of the Terran Empire’s logo on the back of the ornament. This ornament could be displayed all year on a desk or shelf, along with the previous episode ornaments for a nice presentation, thus giving fans an all year purpose to the ornament.

Mirror Mirror

Romulan Bird of Prey ($32.95)

The Romulan Bird of Prey includes lighting effects and was sculpted by the venerable artist Lynn Norton.

Hallmark's Romulan Bird of Prey

NYCC 2011 Exclusive

All of the 2011 ornaments are available now at most local Hallmark
stores, except the U.S.S. Defiant as featured in the episode “The Tholian Web” which will exclusive ornament, limited to an edition of 700, and available for those attending the New York Comic Con (October 13th to the 16th). In 2009, Hallmark had a San Diego Comic Con exclusive of Uhura which has proven to be one of the most popular (and expensive in the secondary market) ornaments of the line.

The Defiant is based on a 2006 Enterprise ornament and features a glowing green paint as your ornament simulates phasing in an out of our known universe. Be careful not to have your Christmas tree phased out as you decorate.

2012 Preview

Hallmark has announced that next year’s ornaments are Dr. McCoy

Star Trek Trading Cards

Rittenhouse Archives is scheduled to release a new high-end series of trading cards aimed at series collectors, entitled Star Trek Movies: Heroes and Villains Premium Packs later this year.

Star Trek trading card collectors are used to a traditional delivery system where a box of Rittenhouse Archives Star Trek cards are purchased for about $70 to $80 and contain many packs comprising a complete set of regular cards, a guaranteed amount of autograph cards, and some assorted chase cards. However, the Star Trek Movies: Heroes and Villains Premium Packs are geared towards the hardcore collector.

For $50 per pack (not box) and $750 per box (containing 15 packs), fans get some of the most pricey cards in Star Trek merchandising history. Autographs include William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner, and Christian Slater among others. If a box is ordered, fans also get the guarantee of 1 Shatner or 1 Nimoy autographed cards. While expensive and not for the casual card collector, considering that two autograph cards are included in each pack helps sooth the sticker shock for interested fans.

Luckily for most trading card collectors who do not have this kind of budget, Rittenhouse Archives is continuing to release the more traditional and less expensive formatted Trek cards.

Star Trek: The Next Generation cards Now available is The Complete Star Trek: The Next Generation Trading Cards: Series 1 cards meant to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of TNG next year. For about $85, collectors get a box of cards that includes 4 autographed cards, a complete set of 90 base cards, and various chase cards.

Autographs in this set include Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Dwight Schultz, Gates McFadden, and other celebrities. Additionally, a lucky 30 fans will find Gene Roddenberry signed items cut into card format randomly included. Series 1 details the first 88 episode of TNG, and the second series is planned for early 2012.

As with all Rittenhouse Archive sets, there are also customized binders available for purchase that include a bonus card to hold the collection.

All items could be ordered from your local comic or hobby store, or directly from Rittenhouse Archives.
