Star Trek: Renegades is eyeing a summer or fall 2014 release as post-production already underway.
The Renegades cast includes several former Star Trek actors, including Walter Koenig, Tim Russ, Gary Graham, Robert Picardo, Manu Intiraymi and Richard Herd.

J.J. Abrams, who is currently working on Star Wars Episode VII, discussed the possibility of Star Trek returning to the small screen, in a new interview with EW.
Sparked by the success of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, Abrams wasn’t optimistic about Star Trek returning to its roots on television, saying:
I have been hearing for as long as I can remember that CBS, who has the rights to the series, has just been saying they’re not interested. That’s the word I’ve been told. [A CBS Studios rep replied: “We love the Star Trek franchise, its fan base and the many possibilities for its future when the time is right.
However, an unnamed CBS Studio representative left the door open, responding to Abrams’ comments, by saying:
We love the Star Trek franchise, its fan base and the many possibilities for its future when the time is right
Industry insiders speculate that CBS doesn’t want to jeopardize the current success of the rebooted film franchise by over saturating the market. With a new Star Trek film in the pipeline for 2016, fans may be waiting awhile before a new television series goes hits the airwaves.

With J.J. Abrams focussing his attention on the Star Wars franchise, Star Trek has been left without a director for its upcoming third installment. However, Variety is reporting that Joe Cornish may direct Star Trek 3 and that this may be the second time such an offer has been made to him.
Cornish’s resume includes director duties on the cult hit Attack the Block and co-writer on “Ant-Man” along with Edgar Wright.
Other potential candidates that have been rumored include Jon M. Chu and Rupert Wyatt.
While speaking to Collider back in September, J.J. Abrams said “Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands,” He went on to say “I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done. We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility. I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is.”
