Review: Star Trek: TNG – The Next Level on Blu-ray

Star Trek: TNG Blu-ray Review

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray sampler The Next Level is available starting today, January 31, 2012 and TrekNews.net has a review of the three episode collection.

There’s a lot to like about this sampler set, from its nearly immaculate 1080p high definition transfer to its digitally remastered 7.1 sound.

The show has never looked better and there is a marked difference between the previous DVD offerings and The Next Level. New details in the background and the brightness of the colors are two of the benefits of the collection. However, it is really in the special effects that the true potential of the format is revealed.

Unlike the previous remastering of the original Star Trek, the TNG set does not really include new effects. Instead, with Mike and Denise Okuda’s supervision, the original effects are used here, but taken directly from the original film. This is not a simple upconvert to Blu-ray. Instead, it is as if the show had been intended for the HD era all along and the results are spectacular.

The use of the original masters to create the DVD scene by scene is not only mind-boggling, but also shows the commitment that those working on this endeavor have. It is a tribute to all the original artists that we now get to appreciate the incredible detail of their work as never before. Michael Westmore’s makeup looks unbelievable, especially the detail on Worf. Whether it’s the lighting on 1701-D or the ability to see the true artistry of the Klingon home world, it’s almost as if seeing the effects for the first time. It is as resonate and dramatic a change as it was going from black and white television era to color programs.

The choice of episodes is somewhat odd for the sampler collection, however. It makes sense to include “Encounter at Farpoint” as it is the premiere episode. And while it is nice to see Kronos in “Sins of the Father” or the space probe of the “Inner Light” these are hardly effect heavy episodes. It perhaps would have been better to include something along the line of “Best of Both Worlds” or “Yesterday’s Enterprise” to really show how much better TNG is in the HD era. That being said, “Sins of the Father” and “Inner Light” are great introductory episodes for new generations of fans who may be interested in watching the show for the first time. Plus, there are plenty of matte paintings and other makeup and special effects to appreciate. Much appreciated is the inclusion of a “Play All” feature which was not included in the DVD collections.

The bonus features consist of three trailers. The first is for the first season of TNG on Blu-ray which is promised for sometime in 2012. The trailer includes brief comments from Mike Okuda and others working on the show and it certainly is an exciting preview. The second is a commercial for the iPad Star Trek app, and the third is the preview trailer for the TNG HD conversion program which made it round the internet a few months ago.

There really is no better way to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of TNG than with this and future HD collections. It preserves, if you forgive the pun, TNG for future generations.

WATCH: William Shatner’s Last Priceline Commercial

William Shatner, who has been a spokesperson for Priceline for almost 15 years, filmed his last commercial for the company late last year.

In the final appearance of Shatner’s “Priceline Negotiator” character, he helps a group of passengers escape from a crashed bus before it falls from a bridge into the water below.

In a final heroic effort of “negotiating,” he hands one of the passengers an iPhone with Pricelines app installed as he tells her to “Save yourself — Some Money.”

Collector’s Corner: Looking Back at the 1982 Star Trek CEDs

Star Trek CED Cover

From 1981 until 1986, RCA marketed the precursor to the modern DVD known as the CED (Capacitance Electronic Discs) or VideoDiscs.

Star Trek episodes and films have always been a popular choice for new home entertainment formats, appearing as reel to reel films, BetaMax and VHS tapes, CD-ROMs, and DVDS among others. Star Trek‘s inclusion as one of the first CED titles back in the 1980s was a vote of confidence in the franchise by both RCA and Paramount.

A total of 11 Star Trek episodes and three movies, The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, were available in this format during the five years that CEDs ruled home entertainment.

With this being the 45th anniversary of the first appearance of Khan Noonien Singh, we thought fellow fans would enjoy a nostalgic photo essay about the Trek CEDs.

These are photos of the fourth Star Trek CED which was available starting November 1st, 1982. It contained the programs “Space Seed” and “The Changeling” and was advertised as featuring the episodes that inspired the first two movies.

The cover design is interesting, as it displays heroic images of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Khan, and its larger than LP packaging makes for great presentation.

Mike & Denise Okuda on Remastering TNG: “It’s Amazing”

Mike & Denise Okuda

Michael and Denise Okuda have worked on Star Trek since the mid-eighties. In that time they’ve worked as designers, consultants, technical supervisors and everything in-between.

The couple’s latest Trek-related project is the upcoming release of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it get converted to high-definition for Blu-ray release. They recently discussed the project with StarTrek.com in a special two-part interview.

How helpful was it that both of you were actually there at the very beginning, back when these TNG episodes were shot on the stage?

“In some ways, very helpful, because there are times when they can say, ‘Oh, what was this?’ I can say, ‘Oddly enough, we were there when that was shot.’ On the other hand, a lot of it is simply that we’re now trying to be the eyes and the ears of the original visual effects supervisors, the original producers, the original directors, the original cinematographers, and we’re simply trying to do whatever we can to preserve what they originally wanted to do.” said Michael.

What has it been like for the two of you to sit there and watch work you did 25 years ago, in essence, come back to life – both in little pieces and as entire episodes?

That’s better-looking than I remember it being”

The couple went on to discuss rewatching work they had done 25 years ago.

“It’s absolutely amazing. As proud as we are to have been associated with the Star Trek productions, it’s done, you’re proud of it, you’ve worked so very hard on it… and then you move on. Now, to come back and go, ‘Oh, wow,’ it’s amazing. Part of you goes, ‘Oh, I wish we could have done this’ or ‘Wow, that holds up really well’ or ‘That’s better-looking than I remember it being’ or ‘That’s really elegant.’ Whenever we review an episode, we find ourselves getting sucked into it again.” said Michael.

“And tripping down Memory Lane as well. Memories are buried and then you see something, and it triggers a story or feeling or ‘I remember that day. This was going on.’ So, for us personally, that’s a lot of fun. But, again, for us, working on Star Trek has been an amazing thing in our lives. We keep thinking, ‘Oh, this is the last Star Trek project we’re going to work on,’ and yet things keep coming up, for which we are grateful, because working on Star Trek is a lot of fun.” Denise added.

They went on to discuss their favorite episodes from the series seven-year run.

“You know, it’s a cliche, but every episode is special in its own way. ‘Farpoint’ was the first. It was such a mountain to climb. We were breaking such new ground. It was the first we did everything: the first control panel, the first time you see the ship, the first time you’re going to be transported, the first time you’re on a new planet. It was all those things. To see that and bring it back again, it’s a delight to say, ‘Oh, yeah, that pretty much held up’ or, ‘You might want to tweak this or that.’ On the sampler disk we also have ‘Sins of the Father’ and ‘The Inner Light.’ To go through those again, it was just amazing to see and remember the dramatic depth and breadth and power that Star Trek: The Next Generation developed.” Michael said.

“And, personally, I think ‘The Inner Light’ is such a powerful episode. It crosses lines. It crosses lines between fans of Star Trek and then just the general public, because you can take somebody who’s never seen TNG and sit them down and have them watch that episode, and you get sucked in. It’s just such a beautifully written episode that I couldn’t wait for them to do that. And, fortunately, it’s one of the first we got to do. said Denise.

Since the official announcement of the project, fans have been heavily anticipating the release of all seven seasons of TNG in HD. During the interview, the Okudas went on to talk about how far along they are in the overall conversion process and how much time has already been invested in it.

“It’s kind of hard to measure because we – CBS and us – are simultaneously working on several different episodes as several different stages. So it’s hard question to answer. But we are still on the first season.” said Michael.

“We got a call a couple of years ago from producers Ryan Adams and David Grant, explaining the process and asking us, if this project were green-lit, would we be interested in participating. After listening to all the details and the complexity, we said, ‘Sure, of course we’d be interested.’ We hung up the phone and looked at each other and said, ‘It’ll never happen.’ Then, of course, to our amazement and delight, a year and a half later it went forward.” said Denise.

“Not only did it go forward, but there are so many ways they could have cheated the process. The easiest thing to do would have been to simply upscale the original standard-definition recordings. That would have been such a cheat, but CBS, to their very considerable credit, said, “OK, we’re going to bite the bullet. We’re going to spend the money. We’re going to re-scan the film. We’re going to recomposite the effect.” So we take our hats off to them.” Michael said.

The three-episode sampler disc, Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level is currently available for pre-order through Amazon for $14.99.

Marina Sirtis Talks TNG’s Lasting Effects on the Television Industry

marina-sirtis

In a recent interview with SciFi4Me, Star Trek: The Next Generation star Marina Sirtis discussed the possibilities of appearing in an episode of the Star Trek: Phase Two fan series, TNG’s lasting effects on the television industry and the show’s contribution to the Star Trek franchise.

When asked if she had any interest in doing a web series, such as Star Trek: Phase Two, Sirtis said “I’m a Luddite. I don’t know if you’re audience know what a Luddite is. Back in the Industrial Revolution in England, the Luddites were the people that went around smashing the machinery because it was taking jobs away from people. I feel a bit like that, because I hate technology, and I do worry that we’re losing so many jobs that are now being done by machines. And it worries me. What are we going to do with all these people that aren’t working?”

“So, on a certain level, I’m “anti” that whole concept. But I think what’s going to happen – because right now, I think those series aren’t really being produced by studios or real professional producers who do it as their jobs.” she added.

Sirtis went on to discuss TNG’s lasting effects on the television industry, saying “I think we were like the template. I don’t think a lot of people realize how our show opened the door to so much in show business in Hollywood, because we were the first drama that was made for syndication. Before we came along, it was just reruns of sitcoms, talk shows and game shows in syndication. And we were the first show that was actually made for syndication. And so that opened a whole avenue in Hollywood.”

“I think that our show basically kept the conventions [going], this whole arena is something that we built. I mean, it existed before we came along, but we made it huge, the fan base that we brought to Star Trek. And then that continued on, so I think sometimes our show is not given the credit it deserves. The original show, obviously, gets a lot of credit because they were the first. But we opened a lot of doors in Hollywood.”

Benedict Cumberbatch Says He May Not Be a Villain in Star Trek Sequel [Video]

At Sunday night’s 69th annual Golden Globe Awards, recently announced Star Trek sequel star, Benedict Cumberbatch Cumberbatch teased that his role in the next Trek film may not necessarily be a villain.

“I don’t think we do know that, actually,” Cumberbatch told MTV’s Josh Horowitz “That’s just supposition — And that’s all I’m going to say about it.”

Cumberbatch went on to talk about becoming a Star Trek fan, since the release of the 2009 film and signing on for the unidentified sequel role.

“I started [becoming a Star Trek fan] slowly, but quite genuinely, when he rebooted it with this last film,” the actor said of his own “Trek” familiarity. “I have lots of friends and family, all sorts of people who’ve loved all of the series and all of the films. I’ve been introduced to it through them and now I’m going back to them and asking them questions so I can get up to speed with true Trekkies.”

“[J.J. Abrams has] great ideas. It’s been great fun to prep,” Cumberbatch said. “I start [shooting] next week, which is really exciting, and I can’t say any more than that.”
