speak-klingon

London-based company, EuroTalk is set to release Talk Now! Learn Klingon, an instructional CD-ROM to teach users how to speak the Klingon language.

The CD-ROM is currently available from EuroTalk’s website and will soon be available at Amazon.com for $34.99 beginning October 14th.

“This is the first sci-fi language we’ve ever published,” said Richard Howeson, EuroTalk chairman. “But Star Trek fans asked us to do it, and we were really happy to explore new frontiers. It allows Klingon speakers all over the world to learn the sci-fi language because all the words on ‘Talk Now! Learn Klingon’ have been translated into 120 Earth tongues, all available on the same disc.”

Manufacturer’s Description

Klingon is the language spoken by the legendary Klingon warriors in the hugely successful Star Trek TV shows and movies.

Language learning specialists EuroTalk have brought out this beginners guide to spoken Klingon with the help of Marc Okrand, creator of the Klingon language.

The Talk Now! CD-ROM covers everyday words Klingons would use if they lived on Earth today, including some brand new ones. Phrases that are unique to the Klingon culture are not included.

”People interested in learning Klingon will get a big kick out of this product – it’s great fun!” says Marc Okrand.

Importantly, you don’t have to be an English / American speaker to use this disc as the Klingon has been translated into 100+ tongues. Choose yours.

EuroTalk software is completely intuitive – the simple interface means that learning is as easy as pointing and clicking. Speech recording allows you to record your voice and compare it to the approved pronunciation. Quiz yourself with 2 levels of difficulty to test what you’ve learnt – earn points and monitor your progress, then take on the memory man and get the maximum possible 1800 points to receive the gold award!

Learn at your computer – or alternatively, print out pages of the printable picture dictionary, or you can learn on the move using the iPod application.

Above all, EuroTalk discs are designed to be fun. Research in the early 1990s at the University of California revealed that memory is greatly improved when accompanied by fun and laughter. Our quizzes, games and stories provide this and you will be amazed how much you remember after a surprisingly short time devoted to a disc.

Federation Follies: Gaming In a Temporal Loop

SEGA Game Gear's Star Trek: TNG

Earlier this week, I found myself in a bit of a dilemma. The video gaming bug was bitin’ hard, but what to play? I was burned out with online games; Rock Band would wake my slumbering bride; and I’m too much of a dinosaur to have games on my phone. Could Star Trek rescue me from this predicament? Of course it could! Hence I rushed to the closet, pushed aside my Super Powers action figures and Darth Vader Voice Changer helmet, and revealed my salvation: my SEGA Game gear, circa 1992. It was time for a little Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Advanced Holodeck Tutorial.

Developed by Absolute Entertainment, Inc. and released to eager Trek gamers in 1994, The Advanced Holodeck Tutorial puts players on the bridge of a holographic recreation of Picard’s U.S.S. Enterprise for their final exam at Starfleet Academy… provided the “cadet” has six AA batteries to power SEGA’s monolithic handheld. Digging for Duracells, I was reminded why I hadn’t played this game since the Clinton administration. Not wanting to empty out all my Wii remotes, I opted to connect the brick to my car battery and try that instead (online sources promised at least three hours of playtime this way; more than enough). With my Optima’s engine humming and the Game Gear chugging along nicely, I was welcomed to Starfleet Academy.

SEGA Star Trek TNG

It was like I was there! There was no time to banter with Boothby, though; Captain Picard had a mission (and you had best believe I chose to accept it). Apparently, Talarians were attacking a freighter near Crystalia and their warp core was going to blow! It was up to me and the other five people on this holographic spaceship to save their bacon. I commanded Mr. Data to set course for Crystalia, MAXIMUM WARP, and we were on our way.

Upon arrival, I found empty space and stars. That was about it. It took me a few minutes to remember how to bring up the sensors so that I could see… more stars. Hmmmm. Change Magnification? That sounded good… then I was being shot at. By somebody. Somewhere. True to the television series, my bridge officers were happy to talk about that, but weren’t about to do anything about it until I gave the go-ahead. That’s good training! I asked Worf to raise shields and arm the weapons systems. The ship then floated aimlessly for a bit as I tried to remember how to steer. Things were not going well.

SEGA Game Gear's Star Trek: The Next Generation

As any seasoned video gamer will tell you, when in doubt: button mash! After slapping around my twenty-year-old handheld gaming device for four minutes, I managed to turn the ship and find my attacker (or the freighter? I wasn’t too sure). Remembering my tactical training from the academy (and Star Trek: Online) I was ready to drain my target’s shields with my phasers before delivering the killing blows via photon torpedoes. Apparently the Talarian technology of 1994 could only handle two PEW-PEW’s before my victory was assured, however. High on my own success, I turned my attention to the wounded freighter and her endangered crew. “Chief O’Brien,” I cried, “lock on and transport survivors!” At which point Miles politely informed me that we needed to be closer to the freighter.

Button mashing and profanity ensued.

After finally inching the Enterprise up to the freighter, I dropped shields (thank you, Mr. Worf, for reminding me) and began to transport. Just like in real-life, I had to move a tiny box across a glowing TRON grid to find digitized representations of terrified survivors running wildly away from my transporter lock, their tiny arms thrashing and flailing wildly. Or maybe that’s just how the Game Gear animates people walking. Either way, Chief O’Brien and I beamed them up just in time. My first mission was complete, Captain Picard congratulated me, and I was reminded that I could continue my progress in the future by proving to the Game Gear I remembered the name of Data’s cat.

SEGA Starfleet Academy

As goofy as all that sounds, I adore this game. I remember playing it endlessly when I was younger, and it’s the biggest reason I have my Game Gear accessible (behind the figures and the helmet) today. Ship-to-ship combat may be a bit weak, but the transporter operation and re-routing of power in engineering are done extremely well; the former is actually incredibly similar to the way transporters are portrayed in the recent Star Trek reboot. The graphics are good for a game this age, and the sound effects are fun (if not entirely accurate). It’s no “A Final Unity,” but then: what is?

Until Star Trek: Online goes free-to-play, I know what I’ll be playing to scratch my Trek Gaming itch. I’ll just have to keep a close eye on my car battery.

Nana Visitor and Rene Auberjonis Say They’re Excited To See DS9 Return in Upcoming Online Game [Video]

nana-visitor

Former co-stars on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Nana Visitor and Rene Auberjonis recently sat down with Gameforge to discuss the upcoming browser-based video game, Star Trek: Infinite Space.

During the interview, Visitor talked about revisiting Deep Space Nine in an online environment, saying “I think it’s appropriate, because Deep Space Nine has a lot to say about our worries and our worldly problems right now. Certainly, to be able to condense those feelings down and play them out in a game, I think that serves a purpose.”

Discussing DS9′s return in the game, Auberjonis said “I would think that Deep Space Nine of all the Star Trek manifestations is the one made for this kind of game, because of the wonderfully complex political and military conflicts that happened within that universe.”

“So I’ll be very excited to see how comes together. I’m sure it will draw people to this world, the Star Trek world who maybe had not experienced it and will bring a whole new audience to it.” he continued.

The free-to-play browser-based Star Trek: Infinite Space is scheduled to be released later this year.

The first release will be the sampler disc, Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Next Level will be released on January 31.

The entire series of 178 episodes, remastered in full high-definition 1080p with 7.1 Master Audio, will follow that release.

Read complete details for Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray.

Below is the first glimpse at the remastered footage.

It’s Official — Star Trek: The Next Generation is Coming to Blu-ray

star-trek-tng-blu-ray

CBS officially confirmed today that Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition on Blu-ray, beginning with a sampler disc in January 2012. This release will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the series.

The sampler disc will be called Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Next Level and will include the episodes “Encounter at Farpoint,” “Sins of the Father,” and “The Inner Light” which we previously reported.

The disc will be available on January 31, 2012, slightly later than originally rumored. The disc has a suggested retail price of $21.99.

“Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of Star Trek: The Next Generation,” said Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Entertainment. “Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.”

CBS also plans to release all 178 episodes of TNG on Blu-ray, beginning with the first season, later in the year.

The episodes for each release will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p from the original film negatives, which CBS has pulled from 25,000-plus reels of footage. The episodes will also feature 7.1 DTS Master Audio.

Longtime Star Trek figures Michael and Denise Okuda will act as consultants for the project.

Ethan Phillips Talks Voyager and Neelix’s Role on the Show

ethan-phillips
Ethan Phillips as Neelix

Ethan Phillips played the Talaxian chef, Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager for all seven seasons.

In a recent interview, Phillips discussed the evolution of the character, his place on the show and his time on Voyager.

“Neelix began life on Voyager as sort of a roustabout,” said Phillips. “I wouldn’t necessarily say that he was a nefarious guy, but he certainly was involved in his share of shady dealings, as we found out when he met up with his old pal Wixiban [James Nardini] in the episode “Fair Trade.” However, in the show’s seven years he changed and became somebody who wanted to take more pride in his accomplishments.”

In Voyager’s pilot, “Caretaker,” Neelix was welcomed aboard along with his Ocampan partner, Kes. In later seasons, Neelix would create bonds and relationships with other characters, including Tuvok, Captain Janeway, Seven of Nine and Naomi Wildman.

“Neelix had a big heart, you know? He was like a life-size teddy bear with a fierce determination to be of service. That can sometimes be a little obnoxious and, quite frankly, a bit freakish. However, I’d like to think that’s something I would strive for in my own life; to have the altruism, empathy, and compassion Neelix had. He really enjoyed being a do-gooder.” Phillips continued.

“As an actor, you’re so close to your character that sometimes you’re really not conscious of his or her story arc or where it’s headed. That was true of me with Neelix. I’m not even sure what the writers saw when writing for him.” noted Phillips.

“They just came up with their stories and if Neelix featured heavily in one then that was great. If he was featured in an episode where he had an awakening of sorts, then that was all the better. I wouldn’t say that he was an individual who was heavily focused on during Voyager’s seven seasons. Neelix was more of a secondary character on the program.”

“At times, he was comic relief, other times he was almost non-existent. There were blocks of shows where you barely saw him, but he certainly had some strong episodes.” said Phillips.

Phillips went on to discuss the the Neelix character and the story arcs he was involved in.

“I think they did a good job with my character. I would’ve liked to have, perhaps, developed more of an outlandish sense of humor with Neelix. Yes, he became part of Voyager’s crew, and that was fine.  However, it would have been fun to have seen him, not just by virtue of his looks but by his behavior, be a bit different or a little more alien. I’m talking funnier, wackier and slightly stranger.”

“That may have been up to me to do, who knows? Then again, I have no problem taking any cues I’m given and going with them. It’s difficult because sometimes you really don’t know where your responsibility with your character begins and ends. I regret not having made more of a mark than I did with Neelix, but having said that, I feel that he’s a fine addition to the pantheon of Star Trek.”
